Stramit’s steel building products revitalise aged care home

Stramit’s corrugated roofing and wall cladding profile is the inspiration behind the transformation of the Whiddon Group Kelso Aged Care Home in Bathurst, New South Wales.

Architecture firm Jackson Teece was tasked with upgrading the existing 3,300m2 nursing home into a 7,500m2 contemporary aged care facility. Integral to the upgrade was the design of a new building that seamlessly complemented the original structure.

Jackson Teece’s lead architect for the project, Peter Donn, said using Stramit® Corrugated roofing and wall cladding helped them achieve two design objectives.

“We wanted to create a welcoming facility that put residents and visitors at ease while accentuating the overall vibrancy and atmosphere of the care home at large,” he said.

“Stramit’s products also helped us emit a classic Australian appearance, which was highly suitable to the locality.”

Stramit® Corrugated steel has been installed as a wrap-around building envelope on the new entry building component, which forms a link between the old part of the aged care facility and its new addition.

“The COLORBOND® Monument-coloured walls emit a striking modern feel appropriate to the renovated complex, breathing a new sense of vibrancy into the facility that’s experienced on arrival,” Peter said.

And while the new addition adopts a modern, more spacious design, elements of the older building were honoured.

“The old building is capped with existing terracotta roof tiles so we elected to supplement these roof areas with colour compatible Stramit roof sheeting products where new building areas needed to be integrated as seamlessly as possible,” Peter recalls.

“Overall, the completed building composition is a mixture of pitched roof forms intersecting with one another to form a cohesive weatherproof solution.”

Peter adds Stramit building products’ versatility is just one of the many benefits he was looking for.

“I wanted to use a product that’s not only known for its longevity, but also for being maintenance-free,” he said.

“Stramit products also feature easy-fixing methods, while the hi-tensile steel is lightweight but strong. An added bonus is that Stramit’s corrugated roof and wall cladding solutions are also fully tested, with a full range of load performance tables to suit most applications.”
